Aromatherapy can Treat these 8 Common Problems

April 18, 2017Daniella

I’m a big believer in natural remedies and much prefer using something from my garden over the latest product that big pharma is trying to push. I admit at times this may be necessary, but understand that almost all chemical products are derived from natural ingredients. Usually the non-synthesized version works just as well and has less side effects. Therefore, I would like to discuss one of the easiest ways to heal yourself naturally ~ aromatherapy. This is something that is affordable and accessible to anyone and essential oils are a great addition to your holistic healer cabinet.
Aromatherapy is an ancient practice that has been used for thousands of years, but has also evolved over time. The basis of this practice is using the aromas of plant extracts to improve health and well being on all levels. Essential oil extracts have the power to heal various ailments whether physical, mental or even emotional. There are a number of different ways that these oils can be used, and for many different issues:

Stress Relief

This is one of the most popular uses for aromatherapy as there are many essential oils that help relieve stress and feelings of anxiety. Stress occurs because of over-thinking and an inability to clear the mind. It is a problem that affects each and every person at some point or another. Many essential oils have an amazing soothing effect and can be a useful tool for relaxing the body and calming the mind.

The best oils to overcome stress and feel calmer are:Lavender, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, Rose, Jasmine, Lemon and Clary Sage.

Congestion

Sinus problems is something most of us have to deal with, especially when the seasons change and hay fever flares up. It is caused by a build-up of mucus in the nasal passages that then cause inflammation in the sinus cavities. This may seem harmless, but it can make breathing quite difficult. Aromatherapy is a proven method to ease respiratory inflammation and get rid of congestion.

The best oils to combat congestion are: Eucalyptus, Juniper Berry, Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil), Peppermint, Frankincense and Marjoram.

Poor Immune System

The best thing about essential oils is that most of them have antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. These properties help the body to naturally speed up the healing process of wounds and some illnesses. Using these oils can even help cleanse an area of germs and bacteria.

The best oils to help speed up the healing process, cleanse wounds and support your immune system are: Eucalyptus, Tea Tree Oil, Rosehip, Lavender, Oregano, Clove, Thyme and Sandalwood.

Headaches

Whether you suffer from cluster headaches due to stress, headaches due to low blood pressure, tension headaches or even migraines, essential oils can help. Regardless of what type of headaches you suffer from, aromatherapy can be utilised to help ease the pain.

The best oils to help relieve headaches are: Lavender, Basil, Marjoram, Eucalyptus, Wintergreen, Rosemary and Ylang-Ylang.

Insomnia

Since many essential oils have a soothing almost sedative like effect they are a great way to help you fall asleep faster. Not only can they help with insomnia but they can ensure that you rest better and wake up feeling happy and refreshed. Aromatherapy has long been used to realign natural circadian rhythms.

The best oils to help you fall asleep and get a good night’s rest, so that you feel energized the next day are: Lavender, Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, Chamomile, Marjoram and Frankincense.

Nausea

Everyone experiences nausea at times and it really isn’t a nice feeling. It can be triggered by motion sickness, morning sickness or any illness, but essential oils can help you fight that urge to vomit.

The best oils to reduce nausea or prevent vomiting are: Ginger, lemon, Peppermint, Fennel and Rose.

Anxiety or Depression

Essential oils are wonderful to use when you need to boost your mood or improve your spirits. Not only do these oils have the ability to make you feel happier, but they can also reduce anxiety.

The best oils to calm, uplift and promote overall wellbeing are: Peppermint, Lemon, Chamomile, Lavender, Frankincense, Ylang Ylang and Jasmine.

Lack of Concentration and Focus

Essential oils have the power to improve mental clarity which assists in focus, concentration and productivity. Besides this, some oils have the ability to pass through the blood-brain barrier to improve memory and even fight Alzheimer’s.

The best oils to use when you need to improve your cognitive performance are: Clary Sage, Clove, Lavender, Peppermint, Lemon, Frankincense and Sandalwood.

So, the next time you struggle with one of these common ailments, why not use some aromatherapy essential oils. You can diffuse these or even add some drops to your bath. Either way you will feel better and there will be no need for that doctor’s appointment.

Have you tried any of these and how did it work out for you?

I love eucalyptus for congestion and sinus pain. Use a few drops in the shower every day and it really helps with allergy season! I also love lavender for the laundry – I put a few drops on my wool dryer balls and everything smells so nice! Good to know it has a calming effect as well!

I have not tried Eucalyptus oil in the shower before, but it makes sense. Definitely going to try that next time I get allergies, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!

I suffer from migraines and have never thought to try aromatherapy as a form of relief. I will have to pick some lavender and basil oils to see if they help.

I am such a big fan of essential oils. I don’t know how would I overcome any disease without them. Seriously! However, I am still at the beginning of my journey with them so I am very grateful for your post about them… I still doubt which one is good for what. I definitely love Ylang, Ylang, lemon and lavender. I got into a habit of falling asleep while breathing cinnamon from the infuser. Such a *Christmasy* sleep.
